The cavernous building Jabari walks into after leaving CO Spears is astounding.
As Jabari continues his trek into the massive structure, he witnesses how huge amounts of human beings are housed and kept away from society.
The building has open ceilings that envelop two spiral staircases that go up three levels. At the end of those staircases, there is a landing that leads to another set of stairs that travel another two levels higher. This opens the building up as far as the eyes can see to the ceiling.
There are television rooms on each level showing the current talk show program on mute as Jabari stops to take in his surroundings. He sees inmates of all nationalities walking around wearing grey sweat suits and their green uniforms.
The noise is astounding. Hundreds of voices meet together in Jabari’s ear causing him to struggle to make sense of any of the ongoing conversation.
As Jabari stares in awe at the way the men are making their way on top of the high bunks in the middle section of the building, a figure walks up behind him.
He feels a tap on his shoulder and turns around.
“Did you think you could get away with it?” Slick, The Head Orderly, says with a shit-eating grin on his face with Dean behind him.
“I’m sorry?” Jabari replies, a little confused by his question.
“Did you think you could get away with stealing all them white people’s money?” Slick says with a laugh exposing his tongue like a snake sticking from his two front missing bottom teeth.
“Excuse me. I didn’t steal any money,” Jabari starts with an attitude. “I was involved in a mortgage scheme as a low-level offender, and my charges came from that.”
“Whatever. We can talk about that later,” Slick replies. “Take this.”
Slick hands Jabari a thin, tiny mat and three safety razors.
“You will also need what Dean has for you, but I’ll have him carry it to your bunk. Follow me.”
With that Jabari, Dean and Slick begin to weave their way through the sea of bunk beds and inmates. Slick takes the lead with Jabari by his side, and Dean following close behind.
“Welcome to the first stop at your new home,” Slick says as they reach a spiral staircase. Jabari looks around at rows and rows of metal bunk beds that repeat endlessly beyond his vision.
“Wait. Am I to sleep right here, in the open?.” Jabari says before looking up. “Like this.”
“Your thread count days are over for awhile brotha,” Slick says as he begins to laugh again with Dean.
Jabari scans higher in the building to see rooms that are sectioned off beginning on level three.
He points up to a room as Dean and Slick stop laughing.
“How do I get one of those?” Jabari asks. “I can’t live like this the whole time.”
Slick lets out a howl as he grins listening to Jabari. “Look man. If you play your cards right, you will be in a room like that in less than two weeks. In the meantime-” Slick stops talking to point to the bunk of their current location, “This is where you will be staying.-” Slick stops talking again and then points to the very top of the bunk. “Up there.”
Both Slick and Dean begin to laugh again.
“We will get you comfortable and come back later,” Slick says as both Dean and Slick leave to take in their workout.
As Dean and Slick walk away from Jabari to let him get acclimated to his new environment, Jabari begins the next phase of his journey by dropping the contents out of his hands and staring up at the high bunk bed trying to figure out the most feasible way of making his rack.
