Grants for College

Grants for college are sums of money given to students to help pay for school that do not need to be paid back. These grants come from a select few locations and are given for certain reasons. Any student currently going to college can benefit from researching which grants can apply to them.  Grants for college can come from the federal government, your local state government, your college, or a private or non-profit institution. Being how they don’t need to be paid back, it is well worth it for a college student to check how much grants they can possibly receive.  Here are some grants that can be awarded to students to help pay for college.

Grants for College

The Pell Grant is a commonly bestowed grant given directly by the federal government. The Pell Grant can be up to $5,920 and is given to any student whose family earns money within eligible limits. The goal of the Pell Grant was to provide students with lower family income an ability to pay for college without having to worry about repaying loans.  All of the awarded money is ether given to the student’s college or directly bestowed to the student.  This grant can be used for housing, food, transportation, books, or any other fee that the student may encounter while going to college. To apply for the Pell Grant you must fill out the information in the FAFSA(Free application for student aid). This application can be made in person by going to your college and filling out the information there, or it can be done completely online at the website. There are deadlines to apply so being on time is very important if a student wants to receive the grant.

Another federal grant is the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants(FSEOG). This grant is for the students who need the absolute most student aid.  The award for FSEOG will be between $100 and $4000 per year. Students who receive a Pell Grant will typically be given priority when applying for the FSEOG. There are some major differences between the Pell Grant and the FSEOG. The Pell Grant is awarded to every single eligible student. The FSEOG is awarded only to certain colleges that give out the grant, and then it is given out on a first-come-first-serve basis. The way the funding for this grant works is participating colleges are given money for students who are eligible for the award, and the school awards the money to applying students until the money is all distributed.  The funds are distributed at least twice per academic year. To obtain the grant you must be enrolled for an undergraduate program but not have a bachelors degree.

The Academic Competitiveness Grant is given to students in their first or second year in college and have completed rigorous school programs in high school. To be eligible, the student also has to be receiving the Pell Grant as well.  This grant is more difficult to be awarded and is also more humble.  The student can receive $750 in their first school year and $1300 in their second school year. Another requirement is that the student must hold a GPA of at least 3.0. Also the applying student must be a U.S citizen.
